Before venturing into the busy world of motherhood, adventure meant something very different to me. It was about exploring untamed landscapes and uncovering the world’s hidden wonders.
Fast forward to the present—everything is different with kids. I was left wondering–what is the purpose of adventuring?
As a mom, adventuring has morphed into an incredible journey of discovery. And not just the discovery of nature—but also of myself.
It’s become about finding joy in parenting through outdoor activities for families, bonding through adventure, and embracing a healthy lifestyle together.

Getting out on adventures as a mom goes far beyond simple outdoor activities for families or just finding new playgrounds (though those can be part of it!). It’s also about filling our buckets as well.
There are so many benefits to exploring with children. You get the thrill of adventure and to watch your kids flourish while doing outdoor activities.

What’s most important for you to plan for is safety, so ensure you equip your family with the right gear. Having a helmet while biking or sneakers instead of sandals for a forest walk will mean you’re not stressing about safety.
And a small first aid kit is always a good idea.
I keep a small adventure bag ready to go with snacks and other things needed for adventuring. This cuts down on the planning. Unless we need something specific and different, we can grab the bag and go.
You also want to make sure what you’re planning is age-appropriate. The big adventures are often too much for little ones anyway.
Barriers to Adventuring
As with everything, there can be barriers to adventuring. Time can certainly be a significant barrier. With busy schedules, getting out and doing anything can be difficult.
Between work, parenting, and trying to take time for your mental health, it’s tough to fit it all in. But luckily, adventuring with my kids takes care of getting that family time in while working on my mental health.
It seems money is always an obstacle, especially these days. With the cost of everything, adventure travel can seem unobtainable.
Going on grand adventures where money is no object sounds fantastic. But local, low-cost adventures, like nature exploration with kids, are just as great.
These more cost-effective adventures create the habit and ongoing desire to get out and have an adventure. Carving out small, regular time for adventures helps build a healthy lifestyle for families.

The Educational Side of Adventures
The beauty of exploring with children lies in the joy and bonding it fosters and the hands-on educational experiences it naturally provides.
My toddler knows so much more about nature than I ever did at his age. I absolutely love listening to him tell people that a mosquito bites us with its proboscis!
The more we get out, the more I find he asks questions. Very often, I say, “I don’t know, let’s look it up.”
We’ve learned so many things this way. I even have an app on my phone that is great for identifying birds with a photo or audio. We regularly explore the birds in our area, and he can now identify quite a few!
I also love getting him nature books. The amount of information he retains from these books is impressive.
Nature scavenger hunts are a fun way to learn about the nature around you. You can print them off and laminate them so you can use them over and over.
Self-Care Through Adventure
It’s a cliché, but it’s true—you can’t pour from an empty cup. Taking care of yourself is taking care of your kids.
Taking time for adventure amidst the chaos of parenting has become my unexpected version of self-care. It’s easy to forget as we trudge through the daily routines and responsibilities that adventuring with kids isn’t just about them—it’s also a vital part of mental health for parents.

I’ve had to work on it, but it gets easier every time. And the best part is that I’m modeling this for my children, which means rolling with the punches is much easier for them.
